You don't own your followers

This Week’s Playbook: Don't Rent Your Audience — Start Owning It

Here's the uncomfortable truth: your social following isn't yours. Neither is your Google ranking. You're renting that audience from a platform that can change the rules overnight. But your email list? That's a permanent asset you own outright — and it's the single most reliable channel for turning tasting room visitors into wine club members.

Outside of posting client stories, The Paso Robles Wineries Instagram account is almost exclusively focussed on converting followers to email email subscribers. Here's why you should treat it the same way.

The play

Start building your list like the business asset it actually is. The goal is simple: capture every visitor's email address before they leave your world — whether that's your tasting room, your website, or your Instagram profile — and move them into a channel you control.

Why it works

Email isn't the flashiest channel, but the numbers don't lie. Email marketing consistently delivers an ROI of around $36 for every $1 spent — higher than any social platform.

More importantly, email subscribers have already opted in. They've raised their hand and said I want to hear from you. That's an entirely different level of intent than someone who passively scrolled past your Reel.

How to do it

Set up your capture points:

  1. Add a signup form to your website homepage with a specific offer (not just "join our newsletter")
  2. Set up a tablet or printed QR code in your tasting room linked to the same form. Make an offer they cant refuse for that email.
  3. Update your Instagram bio link to go directly to that signup page, or use Manychat and automations to drive engagement and sign ups.

Write a 3-email welcome sequence:

  1. Email 1: Deliver the offer + tell your winery's story in 150 words
  2. Email 2: Share something behind-the-scenes — a vineyard photo, a harvest story, a winemaker note
  3. Email 3: Introduce your wine club with a soft, story-driven pitch

Bottom line

Every winery in Paso Robles is fighting for the same Instagram eyeballs, the same Google keywords, the same ad space. Your email list is the one channel where you set the rules, you own the relationship, and no algorithm can take it away from you.
